Cork, Ireland – September 30, 2025 – Software Radio Systems (SRS), the global leader in open-source RAN, and AI-native wireless innovator DeepSig have been selected by the National Spectrum Consortium (NSC), on behalf of the FutureG Office within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)), to build OCUDU, the Linux of RAN. The initiative will create an open, carrier-grade platform for 5G, 6G, and AI-RAN, that will accelerate innovation while ensuring security and interoperability across future networks.
For over a decade, SRS has advanced wireless innovation through its flagship srsRAN project. With OCUDU, SRS will transition its proven CU and DU software into a scalable open-source platform hosted by the Linux Foundation. This platform will align the goals of the public and private sectors, reduce vendor lock-in, and enable innovation at scale for government, industry, and research.
“Software Radio Systems has built trusted, carrier-grade open-source RAN software for over ten years,” said Paul Sutton, CEO of SRS. “With OCUDU, we are taking the next step to create the ‘Linux of RAN’, a neutrally-governed, carrier-grade, and open-source software platform for 5G, 6G, and beyond.”
OCUDU will be released under the permissive BSD 3-Clause Open MPI open-source software license with neutral governance at the Linux Foundation to ensure transparency, sustainability, and broad community participation. A 3-year development roadmap will see the software expanded to meet the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) Minimum Viable Profile (MVP) requirements and to integrate FutureG-prioritized 3GPP features. All features will undergo rigorous third-party testing and validation by key partners, including National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) test facilities, O-RAN Alliance Test and Integration Centers (OTICs), National Science Foundation (NSF) labs, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) open-source standards labs.
SRS will lead software development and community engagement. Project partner DeepSig will contribute expertise in implementing and supporting AI-native RAN capabilities.
“DeepSig is proud to partner with SRS on this important effort,” said Jim Shea, CEO of DeepSig. “By combining our AI-native expertise with SRS’s open-source leadership, OCUDU will create a secure and scalable RAN platform that drives innovation for defense and commercial networks alike.”
By building the Linux of RAN, OCUDU will provide the mobile wireless ecosystem with a transparent and extensible foundation. It will enable faster innovation, lower costs, and drive interoperability across the wireless ecosystem.
